Few of the diplomats who shaped the 1947 decision left a personal record of it. García Granados did. The Birth of Israel is his account of the UNSCOP investigation in Palestine, the testimony the committee heard, the conditions in the European displaced persons camps, the arguments inside the delegations, and the final weeks before the General Assembly vote.
It is a work of advocacy as much as observation — he makes no secret of where he stood — but it remains a valuable firsthand source for anyone studying how the international community arrived at Resolution 181, and how Latin American support was assembled.
